Common Sewing Machine Problems
There are some common sewing machine problems which you face most repeatedly and which irritate you the most. But dont worry you can really fix it on your own without going to a repair shop. Here I am listing some most common sewing machine issues and their solutions.
Broken or Bent Needles
This is a very common issue and is also very annoying. It is really disgusting when you will be hurry in finishing project of your customer and suddenly your needle breaks. Needles break due to some reasons like prolonged use or may have run over a pin or a hard object while sewing. If this is not the problem then
You have to double check that you are not pulling the fabric while sewing. If you force the fabric while pulling then it can bend or break the needle.
Dont insert the needle loosely. Insert the needle properly.
Use proper size of needle for particular fabrics. You can not use same size of needle for lighter fabrics and heavy upholstery. Using thin needle for thick materials will cause the needle break.
Check if bobbin is inserted properly or not.
Check the thread quality if it is free from knot or not. Avoid cheap thread for your valued projects.
Check if you are using correct presser foot or not.
Check the presser foot presser, if it is securely attached or not.
Needle cramp screw should not be loose, tight it.
Heavy fabrics will hang down and pull down the needle while sewing. So while sewing them always support the fabric to prevent needle getting bend.
Make sure that you are using correct foot. Sewing zig zag stitch on a straight stitch plate will break your needle.
Before sewing a leather materials always wash them with soap to make it soft otherwise use talcum powder to so that it will slide under the foot.
Dont sew very close to zipper, over zipper teeth, stops etc. It may cause the needle break or bend.
Always keep extra needles as backup.
Skipped Stitch Problem
Sometimes you get one or two stitch skipped and later merging into one long stitch.
This problem arises mostly because of needle issue. If the needle is bent or not fully inserted then you will face this problem. Try changing the needle to a different size. Always use the perfect needle size.
Some fabric also cause missed stitches. You can try some interlining or stiffener. Also allow the feed dog to move the fabric rather than forcing the fabric with the hand, which usually results in bend needle.
Always check if top thread is too loose or too tight. Check the thread tension. If it is too tight skipped stitches could occur. Change the tension.
Sometimes lack of maintenance can also cause skipped stitches. Always clean the machine properly and apply oil when needed.
Excess noise while sewing
It is very annoying to work with a loud sewing machine. If your sewing machine is producing too much noise there could be some problem and you should fix it immediately.
To solve this first stop operating the machine right now and unplug the power adapter. Check if the machine is properly cleaned or not. If not first clean it properly and apply oil to the machine.
Another cause of noise is building up of lints in bobbin area and under the needle plate. Clean this area using a lint brush and remove the lint and other debris. Put little oil in the race hook also. It will help in reducing noise.
Check of is there any loose screw in the machine. If yes then first tighten them. Read the sewing machine manual. Oil the machine with a good oil to decrease the friction. If this does not help then you have to take your machine to a repair shop.
Sewing machine stopped suddenly while sewing
The machine stopped automatically to prevent the motor from heating. Need not worry. Just power of the machine. Wait for 20 minutes to restart it.
Thread bunching up on the fabric
There could be various reasons for this problem. Below are some list of reasons.
Check if the bobbin is inserted properly. This may arise if the bobbin thread is aligned in bobbin tension.
Incorrect thread tension may be one of the cause. Reset the upper thread tension.
Check the feed dog it it is down or not. It is also one of the reason of thread bunching.
Do not thread the machine when the presser foot is raised. It also can cause the thread bunching.
Have you threaded the machine correctly. Have you missed something. Check this once.
Thread bunching in the lower side arise because of loose tension in the bobbin. Thread bunching in the upper side is due to loose tension in the upper side of the machine.
